I love these. I'm using your Make a Field Bag from Recycled Clothing idea today - thanks for the inspiration!

Hey Lori,

I eyeballed each set of contents and tried to pack accordingly for our birdwatching expedition. However, we didn't even use half the things we brought - go figure.

These are fantastic! I'm planning for our summer already and trying to get these put together for my girls. What inspiration! I'll have to let you know when I get ours done.

wonderful story - very inspiring! Now I have to run and see if I can make a nice bag oout of old pants and then see if I can fit my things in ;)

thank you, peggy! i want to see it when you’re done! :^)

thank you, maya! :^D)

alis — that’s good, though, right? you can pack less next time! ;^)

i am going to have to show my fishing vest at some point. it is so embarrassing and nerdy. i put everything in my pockets instead of carrying my bag – it distributes the weight so nicely! ;^)

sarah, wonderful, please do show me! :^)

nina, share when you are done! ;^D

These are inspiring. What great photos!

I have to say that I'm a dunce when it comes to field bags. I look at other's bags and feel like I am missing something. However, after years of packing all kinds of things, then either carrying my bag and never opening it, or deciding to leave it behind in the van, I've concluded that "all I need is my eyes, and ears, and mind". It doesn't make for a good photo! Part of me feels a little broken here. It must be a personality thing I guess - Artist Girl does pack a bag and she actually opens it and uses it. And my mom and sister always carried bags and put stuff in and out. So, I could take a photo of my bag and what I put in it, but it would be a sham because I prefer to only take my mind, or to stuff my pockets. I guess what I need is one of those vests with tons of pockets!

Hey, thanks for helping me to think of this :-)

Oh, lovely! Reminds me I need to get off the computer and do something with our river-collection bags.

Ready to add some art supplies to our bag... for the spring! Will it ever come?

alison - ok, ok, we’ll compare vests of many pockets! ;^)

deb, i want to see that when you’re done! i’m taking a net bag the next time we go to the beach. :^)

dawn, no excuses -- you must go out into the snow. ;^) you can look for buds.

thanks, fred!

Thanks Lori, I feel so included and vindicated now. Only one problem, I might have to sit down with my sewing machine and make a vest so that I don't look foolish. Add that to the list...

Hi Lori thanks for putting up my picture I have been at the beach and brought back some interesting rock collections I will show you on my flickr soon Alice x i liked having a nosy in the other bags

this bling is just too much. I'm going to put together a field bag, if only for the joy of collecting these luscious ingredients. (I took architectural drawing in college just because the supply list was so tantalizing -- big mistake as it turned out.) I'd love the specs on your tiny lidded watercolor set, Lori. and boy, do I ever love double-sided tape! -- how have you used it in the field? xo Nancy in NC

I know! I know! The buds are there... it's just drawing/painting them before the fingers freeze!! :)

February 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDawn

alison, well, there are two of us! ;^)

alice, me, too! and thank you so much for letting me share your bag. i love the card holder you made. can you make one for me? :^)

nancy, oh i know just what you mean - the architectural aisle at the campus bookstore was the best!

my watercolor set is a travel one by pebeo. there are quite a few different smaller sets available.

we usually press things in the field by sticking them into our field guide - it's heavy and thick enough to press things nicely - then we can stick them into our journals later. sometimes we use the tape to stick in loose pages we've drawn or painted on, or bits of maps or other ephemera we've picked up somewhere we're visiting. we use it for sticking in photos, too.

dawn, we really need to get ourselves those fingerless gloves. ;^)

LOVE LOVE LOVE Jack's bag! I save pockets off of old cargo pants and shorts, but now I want to save the leg and make a bag, too!

I just love how you have added notes to all of these photos over on your flickr page! You have truly inspired me! I've shared on my blog your post/flickr photo page with my readers in a post dedicated to your field bag. I'm sure you will inspire them as much as you have inspired me. Thank you!
